Targeting the Health Disparities that Impact Nail Salon Workers

Health disparities: preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve good health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations (1)

In addition to the existing gaps in legislation in the Legislation Section, there are disparities in access to healthcare insurance and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act failing to provide healthcare for nail salon workers.

Let's look at some existing health disparities that result from legislation and its lack of support for immigrant nail salon workers.

Check out the infographic below to learn about how immigrant nail salon workers are affected by existing legislation and how each box contributes to a cascade that affects the health of salon workers.

So What Needs to be Done?

There needs to legislative action targeting upstream, which means that these solutions aim to provide preventative measures by addressing structural issues that continue to disproportionately affect immigrant nail salon workers.

Upstream Approaches

1

Regulatory Agencies & EDCs Regulations

  • Passing more legislation that pushes regulatory agencies to follow through with policies and regulations on EDCs

  • Enforcing manufacturers to make language accessible product information to workers and businesses on a federal level

  • Implementing educational programs focused on worker protection against EDC exposure for nail technicians (4)

2

Insurance

Legislation

  • Expanding the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (PPACA) to support undocumented immigrants

  • Passing new legislation that creates access healthcare insurance for undocumented immigrants (3)

  • Amending the Employer Mandate provision of the PPACA to include smaller businesses to ensure that all workers have access to insurance

3

Nail Salon
Working Conditions

  • Increasing use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and improving workplace conditions to lessen exposures (4)

  • Advocating for increase in wages and better worker benefits, such as health care coverage

  • Incorporating linguistic and cultural components in future intervention programs (2)

  • Highlighting and addressing barriers to healthier salons and working conditions (2)
